The Smithsonian is here in Atchison! Come experience the soundtrack of your life “New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music,” the traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution is now open in the Atchison County Historical Society Museum now through Dec. 28, 2008. NOW EXTENDED THROUGH JANUARY 3RD - SEE NEW SCHEDULED DAYS FOR DETAILS New Harmonies is a celebration of the music soundtrack of our lives. Everyone who attends the exhibit, whether for an hour or multiple times will find connections to the music, the performers and the sounds that mean something to their own life. This unique exhibit looks at a wide variety of musical styles from the Sacred (gospel, ethnic and Native American), the Blues, Folk, music of ethnic communities and the way these styles blended and boiled to become today's popular music. Special events throughout the exhibit will highlight special local connections for Kansas and Atchison County as well as just being fun events for the whole family. Music in the museum will go beyond the Smithsonian exhibition to include local companion exhbits on Jesse Stone - the god-father of Rock 'n Roll, the musical connections of Atchison citizens from 1854 to today, the instruments brought from around the world to Atchison County and a look at "Listening to Music: 7o years of Radio in Atchison" which looks at small town radio from KVAC to modern KAIR Radio. Visit us during this 6 week run and explore the soundtrack of your life. |
